My Journey with Locs: Reflections, Challenges, and 10 Lessons Learned

Dreadlocks, also called locs, have a long history that goes back to ancient civilizations in Africa, South America, and Greece, where they were seen as a sign of spiritual and religious significance. As I reflect on the current year of 2023, I feel fortunate to have locs adorning my scalp. However, the journey has been challenging. I have lost count of the times I have worn a hat, only to ruin a perfectly good retwist because my hair wasn't "long enough." At times, I have even contemplated cutting them off altogether. When I think back on the four years I've spent growing out my dreadlocks and taking care of them, I can clearly remember how strong my feelings were at first. My impatience and frustration were palpable, but I am grateful for the unwavering support of my twin brother Leithen, a "Loc'd Veteran" of six years, who guided me through the process and helped to silence those negative thoughts. However, the road to having locs is easy with patience; there are various phases that one must endure. Yet, despite the challenges, my hair has never been healthier or looked better. Before I got dreadlocks, I didn't get many compliments on my hair, so it makes me happy to hear them now. Let me share the love I was given with you.

  1. Know your scalp: You have to understand how your hair grows and becomes locked, basically you have to determine how long you can go until your next retwist.

  2. Be patient: Growing dreadlocks takes time and requires patience. It can take anywhere from six months to a year or more for your hair to fully lock up.

  3. Avoid using Heavy conditioner: Heavy conditioner can make your hair soft and smooth, which makes it harder for dreadlocks to form. Instead, use a residue-free shampoo that won't leave any build-up on your hair. (Unless retwisting)

  4. Use a clarifying shampoo: Once a month, use a clarifying shampoo to remove any build-up or residue that may have accumulated on your scalp and hair.

  5. Separate your hair: Use your fingers or a comb to separate your hair into sections and prevent the locks from merging together. This will help your dreads form evenly and prevent them from becoming too large.

  6. Use a natural oil: Apply a small amount of natural oil, such as jojoba or coconut oil, to your hair and scalp to keep your hair moisturized and healthy.

  7. Avoid using wax: Wax can cause build-up and prevent your hair from locking up properly. Instead, use a locking gel or spray designed specifically for dreadlocks.

  8. Protect your hair at night: Sleep with a satin or silk pillowcase or wrap your hair in a scarf to prevent your locks from becoming frizzy or damaged.

  9. Be gentle with your hair: Avoid pulling, tugging, or twisting your locks too much, as this can damage your hair and prevent it from locking up properly.
